A Childbirth Doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides emotional, physical and informational support to a mother and her birth partner before, during and shortly after the birth of her child. Childbirth Doulas are an excellent source of information for parents leading up to and during childbirth, answering questions that other health care professionals may not have time to answer. Childbirth Doulas are also trained in massage and other pain relief techniques helping women and their partners feel more comfortable during labor. Childbirth Doulas offer emotional support and reassurance to the mother and her birth partner, often improving the quality of their childbirth experience. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily (DONA International Website).
Melanie's interest in pregnancy and childbirth began during her 3.5 year Peace Corps service as a prenatal and infant health educator in rural Senegal, West Africa. As a yoga teacher, she began teaching prenatal yoga class while living in Brazil and continues to do so in the United States. Her interest in childbirth grew when she was the doula for the birth of her godson and the birth of her nephew. Melanie uses her cross-cultural experience with pregnancy and birth to support women and partners from diverse backgrounds through their childbirth experience. She believes that giving birth is something that a woman will remember for her entire life, so she strives to support mothers and their birth partners so they have a positive and empowering childbirth experience.
Melanie is a certified Doulas of North America (DONA) Childbirth Doula, CD(DONA). She currently attends births in the Rochester, NY area.
